Our Curriculum

Writing

In EYFS the teaching of writing begins by acknowledging the importance of pre writing skills such as oracy and physical  development. These skills are taught explicitly in a fun and age appropriate way and opportunities that support their development are planned as part of the rich continuous provision.

In Reception children are taught letter formation in conjunction with their daily RWI Phonics programme. A clear focus on posture, pencil grip, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination is planned for and provided within these lessons and the wider curriculum.

In Key stage 2, we use a structured writing cycle to teach writing at Friarage school.  This cycle is adapted to teach writing in Key stage alongside their Read, Write, Inc sessions.

This includes the use of an ‘Excellence text’, which is unpicked through ‘Readers’ Theatre’, vocabulary sessions and developing a ‘Writers’ Toolkit’ where children learn to read as a writer.

Modelled and Slow writes are used to teach, demonstrate and practise skills for that genre. This also provides opportunity for the teaching and revision of grammar skills in context. Children can practise specific sections of text before the independent writing sessions.

Children plan their writing in a variety of ways before writing independently. Peer editing and improving is used to support the editing process. At least once a term a piece of writing is published in neat to be shared with others.

Writing through RWI provides daily spelling sessions so that children can spell quickly and easily by segmenting the sounds in words. Children complete a writing task linked to each book with a strong focus on vocabulary and grammar.

Spelling in KS2 is taught through the Spelling Shed scheme of work with children accessing spelling revision through the online games.

Children work on acquiring good handwriting through the RWI handwriting scheme
